Health services for under 5s with special education needs or who are disabled

Audiology

The consultant-led audiology service provides assessment and management of hearing and balance in people aged up to 19. The service uses a range of tests to facilitate the rehabilitation of children with a hearing impairment and fit digital hearing aids. It also provides a comprehensive balance service.

Barking and Dagenham 0-19 Universal Childrens Service

The Barking and Dagenham 0-19 Childrens Universal service delivers the Healthy Child Programme (HCP). The HCP is a health care programme that is offered to families/ carers with children from antenatal to 19 years of age.

Children’s Integrated Therapies

The Children’s Integrated Therapies (CIT) service is part of Barking and Dagenham Targeted Services. The CIT offers both integrated and single therapies dependent upon need and will provide specialist assessment, treatment and management for those children that meet the criteria for the service.

The team works with children and young people (CYP) aged 0-19 in schools, children’s centres, clinics and their homes to assess need, train and empower children, their care givers and school staff and deliver specific therapeutic packages of care. CYP who have an Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) will be treated according to the requirements of the plan.

Community Medical Paediatrics

The Community Medical Paediatric Service in Barking and Dagenham is available to children and young people where there are concerns about a child’s health, development or educational progress. This includes medical advice for Educational Health Care Plans (EHCP), health assessment of children in care and child protection.

Health Visiting Service

Health visitors work closely with other health services to ensure that children’s health needs are met, and work with other non-health services to ensure that each and every child and young person lives and grows in a safe and healthy environment. The team help support the health and wellbeing of your whole family, from antenatal visits up until your child goes to school.

Nursing service - Child Development Centre (CDC)

The CDC nursing team provides quality, specialist, multi-disciplinary services for children with moderate to severe disabilities and their families registered with a GP in the Barking & Dagenham area, in order to ensure each child reaches their full potential. These include physical and learning disabilities, neuro-developmental disorders, hearing, vision, speech, and language impairments.

Occupational Therapy

The paediatric physiotherapy and occupational therapy team provide a child centred service for any conditions which affect your child’s ability to participate in everyday life. Physiotherapists assess children’s movement, mobility, posture, muscle strength and flexibility. They treat children mainly through exercise, movement and positioning through play. Occupational therapists assess children‘s function in the areas of self care, such as dressing and brushing teeth, school skills, such as pencil skills, using scissors and rulers and participation in play.
